Japan is one of the most desirable markets worldwide. Although it is often believed that Japan is a difficult market to enter, because of differences in language and culture, there are many resources available to help companies from other parts of the world to overcome those perceived barriers. Japanese consumers love buying international brands online, and have grown to become the fourth largest e-commerce market in the world. In order for Canadian brands to succeed, though, they need to develop well thought-out strategies based on knowledge of the Japanese market, customers, regulations, and cross-border operations.  

This webinar will provide an overview of Japanese e-commerce, and an introduction to two companies that can assist overseas brands to effectively penetrate this market. Rakuten Ichiba is one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, with more than 100 million members and $37 billion in domestic e-commerce transactions. Participants will gain an understanding of Rakuten’s cross-border e-commerce business, as well as opportunities and market considerations for Canadian natural health product and food companies seeking to sell to Japan. In addition, participants will be introduced to supply chain and logistics solutions, such as those offered by Yamato, which currently delivers nearly 5 million parcels within Japan alone.

Arnold Ly is a Business Development Manager at Rakuten USA, Inc. His role is to consult and onboard overseas merchants interested in cross border e-commerce trade for Rakuten Japan Marketplace. Previously, Arnold worked as a corporate sales manager for a major Japanese commercial airline. He graduated with honors from the University of California, Irvine.

ABOUT GEORGE TANAKA

George Tanaka is Regional Sales Manager at Yamato Transport USA, Inc., Eastern Region. His key role is to manage and onboard retailers/merchants engaging the e-commerce business model into Asian Countries. He gained over ten years of experience in logistics and freight forwarding, for both outbound and import, prior to being assigned to the Regional Sales Team.
